Jacob felt beset by conflicted emotion as he left Laurel. He had been ruthless with her, but surely he had also filled her with the fear of God. He must convince her to see reason, to obey his dictates, or she would surely end up dead next time.
He regretted that he hadnât told her heâd fully intended to help her and Fancy from the outset. But doing so would only have weakened his case and further endangered her life. Saving her and Fancy would require every ounce of his resolve and more, and he could never hope to pull off this same miracle twice. It was critical that Laurel never plot this sort of treason again!
He had been amazed when sheâd offered to give herself to him, and guilt nagged at him for not declining her offerâindeed, for accepting it so passionately. At the same time, what better way was there to protect her than having her by his sideâand in his bed? Yes, he possessed an ulterior motive; and yes, he was burning to have her for his own. But why deny himself when he was also acting in her best interests? Indeed, Laurelâs offer might give him just the edge he needed with Renshaw, although Laurel would be mad as a hornet when she learned what he truly intended for her.
No matter. He would forge ahead and do what he must. He could not allow Fancy to dieânor watch Laurel be shipped north to a surely life-threatening fate.
Now to help her . . .
Jacob strode to the end of the hallway and burst into one of the sailorsâ rooms. Three seamen were resting along a row of cots. Spotting Jacob marching toward them, two of the men hastily took their leave.
Jacob stopped at Carterâs cot, where the pale, wounded man appeared to be dozing. Wordlessly Jacob hauled the sailor to his feet. Carter gave a ragged cry as his wound was jostled, and tottered in front of Jacob. He still managed a surly expression, though Jacob could see a flicker of fear in the manâs watery eyes.
âSir,â Carter managed in a pained, throaty voice, âthe doctor has ordered me to restââ
âShut up!â Jacob cut in angrily, shaking the man slightly. âYou and I are going to have a talk, Carter. A long, serious talk.â
